ToK Arts Assessment


Task: Find a painting/sculpture/poem/piece of music/film/drama/dance that you believe has great artistic merit. It may be one that has profoundly changed the way in which you interact with the the world, or you may value it for some other reason.

Bring some representation in to class.

  • explain why you chose the piece

  • describe the “truth” or knowledge that it communicates

try to utilize ToK terminology that may include:

  • theories about the nature of art (intention, quality, response)
  • judging art (the aesthetic paradox)
  • cultural paradigms and aesthetic judgement
  • theories about the function and purpose of art (imitation, expression, education)

Your presentation should be no longer than 5 minutes.


CRITERIA:
A
Excellent understanding and presentation of ToK issues. Example from own experience is used to explore the ideas of artistic value and artistic truth in an analytical manner. Student approach is highly reflective and self-aware in terms of the student’s own experience.
B
Very good understanding of ToK issues. Example from own experience is used to explore the ideas of artistic value and artistic truth. Student approach is thoughtful and self-aware.
C
Reasonable understanding of ToK issues. Example from own experience is used to discuss ideas about art in a largely descriptive fashion. Student approach is thoughtful at points.
D
Mediocre understanding of ToK issues. Example from own experience is used to discuss the ideas of artistic value and artistic truth in a largely descriptive fashion. Student approach is narrow and remote from own experience.
E
Poor understanding of ToK issues. The example is clichéd and/or irrelevant and has little relation to students’ own experience. Awareness of ideas of artistic value and artistic truth is minimal.
